- ➤ Family and friends gathered Saturday at Sardis Missionary Baptist Church—honoring Bishop Calvin Woods who fought for equal rights during the civil rights movement. His interment followed at Elmwood Cemetery—marking his lifelong dedication to faith and justice. WVTM 13
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Police responded to a traffic accident report on the 1000 block of Huffman Road shortly after 4 p.m. on Saturday and found a deceased man and a wounded man who was taken to UAB with non-life-threatening injuries—an investigation is underway. AL.com
- ➤ A man was killed and a woman was injured in a shooting in Center Point — police are investigating the incident. 6 WBRC News
- ➤ Derek Washington, a 29-year-old Birmingham resident, was arrested for drug trafficking after multiple law enforcement agencies, including the St. Clair County Drug Enforcement Unit & regional departments, pursued him following his attempted evasion of a traffic stop on Interstate 20. He faces several charges including drug trafficking, unlawful possession and distribution of controlled substances and is held at the St. Clair County Jail in Pell City with a bond set at $3,043,500. - ➤ On July 20, 2025, the Birmingham Youth and Young Adult Fellowship Choir held a benefit concert at The Heights Event and Entertainment Center to celebrate its tenth anniversary and to raise funds for its trip to compete in America's Got Talent quarterfinals airing Sept. 9. The event featured guest performers & vendors as the choir continues its decade-long work to help young musicians grow. AL.com

- ➤ Pelham voters will elect a new mayor on Tuesday, Aug. 26 as council members Maurice Mercer and Rick Wash run on platforms that include education, public safety and responsible development. Mercer, known as the current council president and small business owner, and Wash, a retired police officer and business executive, will focus on fiscal responsibility and careful growth—aiming to sustain the town’s progress. - ➤ Three candidates—incumbent Mayor Tanja Baldwin, councilwoman Lakendria Poellnitz and former officer Robin Sims—are running for mayor in Lipscomb near Bessemer as the town faces political and economic challenges ahead of the Aug. 26 election. Baldwin defends her record of boosting city reserves and expanding the police force while her opponents allege corruption and mismanagement in the police department. AL.com
- ➤ A federal judge on Friday ordered lawmakers to redraw state senate maps before the 2026 election—this ruling may force Governor Kay Ivey to call a special session to address claims of biased redistricting in Montgomery.
