  • Birmingham mourns Bishop Calvin Woods, a civil rights leader who fought for voting rights and marched with MLK—he died at 91 after a lifetime in the struggle against segregation. Friends can pay respects Friday from 3 to 6 p.m. at Sixth Avenue Baptist Church.  WVTM 13

CRIME NEWS

  • Birmingham Police ask for help identifying an armed robbery suspect who took money from a man at the Shell gas station on Oporto-Madrid Boulevard North on Aug. 14 at about 3 p.m.—the suspect then showed a firearm and threatened the victim before leaving in a white vehicle.  6 WBRC News
  • A Birmingham man, Harold Dailey, 35, was arrested in New Orleans for capital murder after he allegedly shot 51-year-old John Roulaine in a parking lot on Aug. 11—Birmingham police and FBI agents worked together on his arrest.  CBS 42
  • A six-year-old boy died after he shot himself with an unsecured gun in an apartment on the 700 Block of 24th Avenue Northwest on Tuesday morning—Birmingham Police are questioning two adults who were in the apartment at the time.  ABC 33/40

  • The Hoover mayoral race will be decided on Aug. 26 as incumbent mayor Frank Brocato faces police chief Nick Derzis—both candidates explained their plans in interviews on CBS 42.  CBS 42

HEALTH NEWS

  • The FDA warned Walmart shoppers to throw away Great Value frozen shrimp that tested positive for trace amounts of the radioactive isotope Cesium-137 after samples were taken at shipping ports—this warning affects products sold in Alabama and other states.  WVTM 13
