- ➤ Reverend Calvin Woods Sr., a civil rights activist, died Friday, August 15 at 91 as confirmed by his family. He led the Southern Christian Leadership Conference until his retirement in 2022 — a role he took over from his brother and used to call out racism and violence in Birmingham. 6 WBRC News

- ➤ Miles Law School named Carole Smitherman as its new dean; the retired judge and Birmingham’s first Black female mayor will now guide future legal professionals—she retired from the bench months ago. WVTM 13
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Alabama Power’s Project SHARE helps low-income customers who are disabled or 60 and older with their power bills—this program began 42 years ago as a partnership with the Salvation Army and has provided over $42 million in aid to more than 412,000 customers.
