BUSINESS NEWS

  • Developers of Phase Two at Village at Brock’s Gap in Hoover plan to expand the retail center with 79,000 square feet of new space on 8.8 acres—adding upscale dining, offices, and high-end national restaurants. The City Council approved up to $5 million in sales tax rebates to support the $37 million project, with site work set to begin by the end of 2025 and the first businesses expected to open by late 2026 or early 2027.  6 WBRC News

CRIME NEWS

  • Birmingham police report that 50-year-old Arthur Neal Jackson Jr.—injured on February 6th at about 8:56 p.m. on Center Street North—died from gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead on August 13th at 1:23 p.m. at UAB Hospital, with authorities investigating his death as a homicide.  ABC 33/40
  • Birmingham Police investigated the homicide of Demetrice Darnell Beverly, 39, who was shot at an apartment complex off Lakeshore Parkway on August 13—officers took a male suspect into custody while the shooting is being treated as domestic.  6 WBRC News
  • Birmingham Police re-arrested murder suspect Terance Alexander on Wednesday after a court mistakenly allowed his release on bond—he was arrested Tuesday for the murder of Taevion Arnold, who was fatally shot last Friday, and a woman suffered non-life-threatening injuries.  1819 News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Miles Law School announced on Thursday that retired Jefferson County Judge Carole Smitherman has been named the new dean. She retired in January after 13 years on the bench and was the first Black female municipal and circuit court judge in Birmingham.  The Birmingham Times

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A Jefferson County judge ruled against dismissing a lawsuit over UAB removing a federal inmate's organs without family consent during an autopsy—used for teaching that raised concerns—and heard arguments from both sides. Attorneys for UAB declined to comment after the hearing.  ABC 33/40

HEALTH NEWS

  • UAB and the NIH announced a strengthened partnership on Wednesday to improve healthcare quality in Alabama and nationwide using over $28M in federal funds secured by Senator Katie Britt. The plan follows UAB’s request to reduce spending after a $70M federal cut and still requires full Senate and House approval—making next steps crucial.  WVTM 13
