BUSINESS NEWS

  • Southern Research celebrated the grand opening of its new $98 million biotech center on 9th Ave Tuesday in Birmingham. The facility adds 150,000 square feet of lab space and will host the Catalyst genomic program to expand access to free genetic testing and precision medicine in local communities.  Bham Now
  • Two brothers from Stone Building Co. built Birmingham’s new $46 million Coca-Cola Amphitheater in 11 months, and its first event took place on June 22. The project used 650 tons of steel, 8,500 cubic yards of concrete, and over 700 workers, and Live Nation assumed management a day ahead of schedule—planning nearly 30 shows for its first season.  AL.com

  • The family of 3-year-old Keterrius Starkes Jr. filed a wrongful death lawsuit against state and county officials, a contracted social worker, and Covenant Services after he died in a hot car on July 22 in Bessemer—court documents allege negligence and a failure to supervise him during a heat advisory led to his death.  Yellowhammer News
  • Birmingham police are investigating the fatal shooting of 26-year-old Quindarius Allen on the 900 block of 5th Avenue North early Tuesday morning — he was shot around 12:13 a.m. and pronounced dead at 12:35 a.m. — as part of the homicide investigation.  CBS 42
  • Police are investigating an overnight shooting on 5th Avenue North in Birmingham that left one person dead and another injured—detectives counted over 25 evidence markers near a white car and noted no one is in custody.  6 WBRC News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Julie Schifanella and her daughter Sophia, who work at a hospital unit, will graduate Aug. 16 from UAB’s AI in Medicine certificate program—they plan to use their new skills to improve patient care by developing tools to detect brain viruses and support autism care.  University of Alabama at Birmingham

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Birmingham approved an agreement with Faith Chapel Care Center for a Homes for All pilot that will install 15 tiny pallet homes in downtown by the end of the year so the first residents can move in by January—costing $2.4 million and offering 24/7 support.  AL.com
  • Birmingham will begin construction on its $2.4 million Home For All microshelter pilot program that will help unhoused residents with 15 private shelters, each with a bed, desk, microwave, and climate control—set to finish by the end of the year. Faith Chapel Care Center will run the site and add extra services to help residents move to permanent housing.  ABC 33/40
