COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Mitchell's Place, a nonprofit in Birmingham that helps children with autism and other developmental differences, celebrated its 20th anniversary on Saturday with a dragon boat race and festival at East Lake Park. Teams of 11 or more paddlers raced a boat 46 feet long to raise funds and promote autism awareness.  WVTM 13

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Golden Rule Bar-B-Q and Grill broke the Guinness world record on August 9 by selling 6,215 pulled pork sandwiches in eight hours—beating the previous record of 4,775—and received an official certificate for their achievement.  CBS 42
  • Habaneros Mexican Grill—a beloved local restaurant—is building a new restaurant a mile from its former Hoover Commons spot and will open it in September. The restaurant closed its Montgomery Highway location in February and has received strong support from local customers.  AL.com

CRIME NEWS

  • A high-speed chase on I-20 near Leeds ended when police arrested a male and a female after spotting a stolen car from Birmingham — the male now faces charges for possession of marijuana, attempting to elude an officer, receiving stolen property, and reckless driving.  ABC 33/40

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A professional Santa, Bryan Taunton, is running for Sylacauga mayor on Aug. 26 and plans to shift his Santa duties if elected—he lost the 2016 race by about 300 votes and now faces a crowded field. Three school board members already serve as Santas in Alabama—this trend shows how trusted, festive figures are entering local government.  AL.com
  • Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin said he will appear in the 2025 mayoral debate tomorrow, Aug. 12 at 6:30 p.m. on WJLD 104.1 FM — joining invited candidates including state Rep. Juandalynn Givan, business developer Brian K. Rice, county Commissioner Lashunda Scales and businessman-pastor Frank Woodson as he seeks a third term.  The Birmingham Times

HEALTH NEWS

  • Kenny Shafer has been named CEO of UAB St. Vincent’s Birmingham and will start his role on September 2. He comes with over a decade of hospital leadership from Johnson City Medical Center — he will oversee daily operations and help integrate the hospital with the UAB Health System.  1819 News
