- ➤ Jefferson County deputies arrested Luis Rey Guerro Martinez for the capital murder of Gumero Olvera Castro—shot on July 6 during a domestic dispute in Bessemer—after he was apprehended at the Mexican border and booked in jail on August 5 with no bond. 6 WBRC News
- ➤ Activists & the family of Jabari Peoples are demanding full release of the body cam and other videos, the officer's name, and his phone after Peoples was shot by a Homewood officer on June 23, and they are protesting near the police department with a sit-in planned today and a larger demonstration on Aug 22 until justice is served. - ➤ Brent Leggs, executive director of the African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund, returned to Birmingham last month to lead efforts to restore the historic Prince Hall Masonic Temple—an important landmark on the city’s Black Wall Street designed by Robert R. Taylor. Known for his work on projects like Madam C.J. Walker’s estate and the A.G. - ➤ Shelby County Schools Superintendent Lewis Brooks told CBS 42 Morning News today what students and parents can expect as classes begin — he explained new safety measures and classroom guidelines designed to support the start of the school year. CBS 42
- ➤ Birmingham City Schools welcomes nearly 20,000 students back today as the district rolls out new plans to reduce absences and improve classroom support after earning a C rating last year. Superintendent Mark Sullivan said the district will add resources and services—efforts aimed at earning a B on the state report card. WVTM 13

- ➤ Residents in Hoover had a chance to ask questions and hear local candidates for City Council and mayor at a two‑night forum held at Shades Crest Baptist Church in Bluff Park on Tuesday, August 5 and Thursday, August 7. The forum featured responses from incumbent Frank Brocato and challenger Nick Derzis — the current police chief — and allowed residents to submit questions online. ABC 33/40
- ➤ Homewood Mayor Alex Wyatt said developer Mike Mouron dropped his plan to build a steakhouse at the old jail site after public outcry and a lawsuit raised concerns about fairness. The city will hold a public hearing on Aug 11 — where officials will decide on a new plan for the property. AL.com
