CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Authorities announced that a joint operation called 'Unity Shield' by the Birmingham Police, Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, Gulf Coast Regional Fugitive Task Force and Irondale Police led to 59 arrests and 75 charges — officers also recovered two stolen vehicles, seized three firearms and confiscated narcotics including cocaine, pills and marijuana. - ➤ Multiple law enforcement agencies including the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, U.S. Marshals, Birmingham Police Department, Gulf Coast Regional Fugitive Task Force and Irondale Police Department arrested nearly 60 suspects during Operation Unity Shield on July 31 in Jefferson County — the joint operation resulted in 59 arrests with 75 charges — and officials said the effort focused on crime deterrence, community engagement and intelligence gathering. - ➤ The Birmingham Museum of Art will open the exhibit Wall to Wall: Antoine Williams and Josiah Golson on August 9, featuring a site-specific installation titled 'Go to the tree and get the pure sap and find out whether they were right' that examines Black neurodiversity — a reception and panel discussion will be held on August 7 — where local experts will discuss the work and its impact. - ➤ A recent study of 8,000 school districts across 30 states found Birmingham City Schools ranks among the top in math recovery. Superintendent Dr. Mark Sullivan said more details on the study and new school year plans will be shared soon. ABC 33/40
- ➤ Leeds Primary School is changing its plans for the new school year after a lightning strike in June caused a fire that destroyed 15 classrooms. The school will move kindergarten classes to one wing—nearly doubling class sizes to about 33 students—and is accepting bids for repairs that will take 8 to 12 weeks. ABC 33/40
- ➤ Birmingham City Schools showed strong student growth when a study ranked the district as number one in math recovery and cut F schools from 15 to 7 — improvements credited to the I-Ready program. Students will return to classes Thursday, Aug. 7. WVTM 13
