CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Birmingham Police are investigating a shooting on Gallant Drive that occurred Sunday when a suspect fired shots into an occupied apartment building and grazed a woman’s ankle—police have not yet confirmed if the suspect is in custody. ABC 33/40
- ➤ Birmingham Police are investigating a shooting at an apartment complex in the Woodaire Estates community on Gallant Drive in North Birmingham where gunfire struck several units — no injuries have been reported and no suspects have been taken into custody. WVTM 13
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ On Sunday, families gathered at Linn Park for the Tools for School event that gave students and teachers free supplies. City officials and sponsors offered food trucks, music and face painting—showing a strong local commitment to education. WVTM 13
- ➤ Birmingham City Schools has partnered with United Way of Central Alabama to hire nearly 65 tutors to help students in grades six to twelve with reading and math, where tutors work 5—20 hours a week for $15 an hour and receive extra training. United Way will hold a recruiting session on August 22 at Carver High School. 6 WBRC News

- ➤ Cool Green Trees is planting native trees in Jefferson County to add shade and cool neighborhoods hit by urban heat islands—an effort that includes new trees on Norwood Boulevard and Keith Smith’s street—and will care for each tree for two years. 6 WBRC News

- ➤ Brian Gunn, a Norwood resident and community advocate, is running for the District 8 city council seat and says Birmingham deserves better leadership to tackle vacant lots, gun violence and business closures.
