  • Community members gathered in Bessemer to honor 3-year-old KJ Starkes Jr. who died in a hot car on July 22 as leaders like State Rep. Patrick Sellers & Mayor Kenneth Gulley called for accountability and change.  CBS 42

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Sen. Matt Woods prefiled a bill that would set statewide standards for reporting school threats by requiring school principals to alert law enforcement of any threat disrupting a school, church, or government building—students charged would face a minimum one-year suspension and required evaluations with families covering law enforcement costs.  6 WBRC News
  • Alabama Public Television will reduce its national programming and add more local shows because of a 13% funding drop from federal cuts. The network plans to include more high school and community college sports to better connect with local viewers—steps that aim to shift its schedule toward more Alabama-focused content.  1819 News
  • Central Alabama Water crew worked on a water main break in Hoover on Saturday at the 3000 block of John Hawkins Parkway—this break caused a water outage at Patton Creek Shopping Center and on Creekside Avenue—and repairs were expected to finish Saturday night.  CBS 42
  • Mountain Brook will hold a municipal election on Aug. 26 to choose one of four council candidates to lead the town during a major government change. Mayor Stewart Welch retired after two terms and was replaced by unopposed Graham Smith while Council President Virginia Smith and City Manager Sam Gaston stepped down after 25 and 32 years + Finance Director Steve Boone is set to fill Gaston’s role as the remaining council members serve until November 2027.  AL.com
