  • Four Birmingham churches will host Back to School Teen Summit 5.0 at Boutwell Auditorium on August 3 with doors opening at 12:30 p.m. The summit will equip over 1,000 students with mental, spiritual, and emotional life skills for the new school year—followed by a city back to school giveaway.  6 WBRC News

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A Jasper man, Jason A. McCurry, 37, was killed at 8:30 p.m. on Alabama State Route 69 near mile marker 214 about six miles north of Jasper when he was struck by a 2017 Toyota Corolla—troopers are investigating the crash—and his death was confirmed at the scene.  WVTM 13

  • The Sumiton Police Department is searching for three missing siblings—8-month-old Levi Stuart, 3-year-old Marlee Bell and 4-year-old Paislee Bell—who were last seen on July 20 at about 12:30 p.m. near Ponderosa Trail in Sumiton.  ABC 33/40
  • A juvenile suffered life-threatening injuries after being shot just before 1 a.m. on July 30th in the 100 block of Carol Drive—Birmingham police said no arrests have been made.  ABC 33/40
  • Gus’s Hotdogs is holding a GoFundMe to support longtime employee Carl “LA” Alexander after his teen son Reginald Pope—a rising senior at Woodlawn High and football player—was fatally shot on July 25th at 8:30 a.m. in an apartment on the 7500 block of 67th Courtway South, and police issued a reckless manslaughter warrant against a juvenile suspect.  AL.com
  • The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency said its investigation into the death of 18-year-old Jabari Peoples, who was shot by a Homewood officer on June 22, will conclude Friday — then the agency will release all body-worn camera footage to the Homewood Police Department and the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office.  CBS 42

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Birmingham City Schools will open the new early learning center annex at Martha Gaskins Elementary on Aug. 7 to serve Pre-K through first-grade students. The 46,000-square-foot center on the former North Roebuck site includes 21 classrooms, a library, a computer lab, renovated cafeteria and gym, and two playgrounds — built to help young students start school with a strong foundation.  The Birmingham Times
  • UAB will offer ten new graduate certificates and degree paths (spanning arts, health, and technology) this fall, including a first-of-its-kind undergraduate program in eSports Performance Management and Coaching available on campus and online. The university also will add health and nursing certificates (with a post-graduate Addictions Nursing option launching spring 2026) to expand opportunities for Blazers.  University of Alabama at Birmingham
  • Superintendents Mark Sullivan and Walter Gonsoulin met at Titusville Branch Library to discuss challenges and successes in public education as they prepare for the school year starting August 7. They reviewed improved test scores and expanded programs while warning that federal funding cuts may hurt students—highlighting the need to support quality education for every child—amid rising competition from charter and private schools.  The Birmingham Times
