ECONOMY NEWS

  • Irondale officials announced a $105 million investment for Costco's sixth location at Grants Mill Road and I-459 — a move that will create 200-300 jobs and add $6-8 million in annual sales tax revenue when completed. Mayor James D. Stewart, Jr. said the development is a defining moment for the city — a sign that more high-quality projects are expected as the local economy grows.  WVTM 13

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Two local organizations will host a forum for mayoral candidates Thursday night from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Fraternal Order of Police Birmingham Lodge (2988 Winewood Road) where moderator Joseph Bryant will lead a discussion with five challengers including Jerimy Littlepage, Brian K. Rice, Lashunda Scales, Juandalynn Givan, and Frank Woodson. The forum comes as incumbent Mayor Randall Woodfin and other invitees await to share their plans ahead of the municipal election on Aug. 26.  AL.com
  • County officials closed the Parkwood Road bridge over Shades Creek yesterday after an inspection found structural concerns—crews are now evaluating the damage to ensure safety.  ABC 33/40
  • On Tuesday, federal judges questioned lawyers over a request by Black voters and civil rights groups to have every new congressional map drawn in the next seven years reviewed under the Voting Rights Act. The groups argue the review is needed after state lawmakers were accused of drawing an unfair map that diluted Black voters’ strength in the 2024 elections.  WBHM
