- ➤ St. Clair County officials said a massive sinkhole closed Highway 231 north of Highway 174 on July 28, and drivers were diverted onto Highway 174 — Mount Moriah Road—while the Alabama Department of Transportation worked at the scene. WVTM 13
- ➤ A 3-year-old in DHR care died in a hot car on Pinetree Drive after a Covenant Services employee forgot him in the backseat from 12:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.—officials confirmed he suffocated. 6 WBRC News

- ➤ CBS 42 anchor David Lamb interviewed JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon on Monday about his visit to downtown Birmingham. Dimon discussed a $2 million philanthropic commitment to launch the Alabama Capital Access Collaborative — a move to help local businesses access more capital. CBS 42
- ➤ JPMorganChase on Monday announced a $2 million commitment to support small businesses by improving capital access and offering technical help (including partnerships with BBRC, Urban Impact, Bronze Valley, Camino Loan Fund, and others) to help local companies grow. The Milken Institute will lead the initial phase (to address challenges and identify opportunities) while the bank plans to expand its branches and create more jobs statewide in the near future. - ➤ Birmingham police carried out a special crime crackdown from July 21 to July 27 that resulted in 35 arrests and the seizure of 10 guns—this effort is linked to ongoing measures to improve neighborhood safety. ABC 33/40
- ➤ Supporters of the late Jabari Peoples gathered at a Homewood city council meeting Monday to demand accountability after Peoples was shot and killed by a police officer; police were present but made no arrests, and activist Eric Hall said protest actions—such as planned sit-in protests at future meetings— may resume next week if answers are not provided. - ➤ Alabama educators received welcome federal funds as $50 million in frozen money was unfrozen for essential education programs following a $21 million release for afterschool and summer activities on June 30. The funds will support teacher salaries for about 280 educators and include an extra $10 million for postsecondary adult education—steps that will help prepare schools for the new school year.
