  • Little Hands Serving Hearts held its 8th Operation Fill-a-Backpack event in Birmingham where over 200 students received free backpacks with school supplies and NBA player Trendon Watford signed autographs & shared encouraging words for the new school year.  ABC 33/40

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A three-year-old child from Bessemer died in a hot car on the 1500 block of Pine Tree Drive in Birmingham earlier this week after being left alone for over five hours while in DHR custody (the incident occurred during a supervised visit), and police are investigating.  Yellowhammer News

CRIME NEWS

  • Birmingham police said a 28 year old man Cameron Keyshawn Jackson faces a capital murder charge after he shot Devin Wayne Hughes near a residence in Ensley early Wednesday morning—he is held at Jefferson County Jail with no bond under a 48 hour felony extension.  CBS 42

CULTURE NEWS

  • On July 26th, the Tuxedo Function in the Junction celebrated 40 years of jazz music at Erskine Hawkins Park with over 2,000 attendees enjoying live performances, food, and local culture. Magnolia Cook, who helped launch the event as neighborhood president, said the celebration deepened community bonds — a tradition cherished in Birmingham.  WVTM 13

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office will run a safety checkpoint in the Alabaster area on Sunday night from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. Drivers must show their license and vehicle insurance at the intersection of Kent Dairy Road and County Road 17—police aim to curb risky driving behaviors.  CBS 42
  • ALDOT will continue planned lane closures on Highway 280 eastbound and westbound today at 7 p.m. for widening work between milepost 1.39 and milepost 4.51 and will reopen the lanes at 6 a.m. Monday — these closures will remain each evening until Friday.  CBS 42
