BUSINESS NEWS

  • Several businesses have opened or are set to open in Birmingham—Fairway Social began serving customers at Urban Supply on July 17, Alo Yoga opened at The Summit on July 18 and Fun City Adventure Park started in Crestwood over the weekend, while Nowhere Tattoos will open in Five Points South on July 25, Hey Bebe Where Yat? will hold a grand opening in Alabaster on July 28 and Red Car Creamery will begin serving in Morris on July 26. Meanwhile, Charm in downtown Birmingham will close in September and host a gathering on August 16 for its loyal customers.  Bham Now

CRIME NEWS

  • Lamarion Charlie is accused of capital murder for the quadruple killing at a Smithfield car wash and appeared in court Monday morning, July 21, where victim families were present—police say he admitted driving the vehicle in the ambush but denied shooting while they search for another suspect.  6 WBRC News
  • At about 9:30 a.m. Monday, Homewood police responded to reports of gunshots near ABC Day Care after a daycare employee fired shots at a parent’s car following an altercation inside the facility—no one was injured and the employee was arrested on attempted murder charges.  WVTM 13
  • Birmingham police made 42 arrests from July 14 to July 20 as part of a planned crime crackdown—officers conducted 124 traffic stops, seized eight firearms, and issued 217 citations while making 25 felony and 17 misdemeanor arrests.  ABC 33/40
  • A family and their attorneys say Phillip Reeder died while in police custody after he reportedly said 'I can't breathe' when an officer restrained him, but city officials claim no officer pressed his neck and no charges were filed (an autopsy ruled his death a homicide due to heart disease, cocaine use and restraint) (the incident occurred on Highway 78 in August).  6 WBRC News

  • A Wall Street Journal article ranks Birmingham as one of five second-tier cities that offer strong jobs and good pay for new college graduates—using ADP research on local sectors. The study shows that health care, tech, and finance jobs help boost the job market—providing more opportunities for young talent.  Bham Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Monday, Alabama officials started an inquiry into claims that First Liberty Building & Loan LLC and its founder, Edwin Brant Frost IV, ran a $140 million Ponzi scheme and tricked investors out of money—Secretary of State Wes Allen asked political candidates to send back donations from Frost-related sources after a federal complaint was filed on July 10.  Yellowhammer News
