ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A multi-vehicle crash on Highway 43 in Northport at 12:39 p.m. on July 16th resulted in one fatality and three minor injuries as first responders arrived — a U.S. Postal Service truck was among the vehicles involved.  AL.com

CRIME NEWS

  • Bibb County police arrested 21-year-old Dalton Terrell for sex crimes against minors—he is charged with rape, sodomy, kidnapping, and human trafficking and is accused of paying adults for access to children aged 3 to 16 during 2024 and 2025.  6 WBRC News
  • Birmingham saw crime rise 7.6% in the first half of 2025 — with property crime increasing by 9.1% and violent crime by 2.1%, even as homicides dropped by 51.3%.  ABC 33/40
  • Birmingham Police responded to East Lake Park on 84th Street North just after 11:30 Wednesday where they found a man dead from a gunshot wound and another with non-life-threatening injuries — investigators say a group met at the park before the shooting.  WVTM 13
  • Birmingham Police said detectives secured an arrest warrant for 34-year-old Casimiro Hernandez—accused of attempted murder when two people were shot and hospitalized on the 1100 Block of 3rd Avenue West on June 22—and he was later apprehended during a traffic stop in Texas on June 23 while he awaits extradition.  ABC 33/40

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Katherine Robertson, chief counsel for Attorney General Steve Marshall and candidate for the office, reported accepting a $1 million donation from the Tennessee dark money group First Principles — a contribution that has raised concerns about campaign rules and voter transparency.  AL.com
  • Hoover Fire Department is applying for a FEMA SAFER grant to buy a new EMS transport unit and add seven firefighter-paramedics after emergency calls grew from 1,600 to over 6,000 each year. The City Council approved a resolution for the grant—if granted, the city will pay part of the personnel costs over three years while the new unit will improve response times.  6 WBRC News
  • The City of Birmingham posted qualifying candidates for its 2025 municipal election—community members will soon vote for a new mayor, council representatives and school board members.  CBS 42
  • Rep. Terri Sewell announced this week that the U.S. Department of Transportation awarded the Birmingham-Jefferson County Transit Authority a $25 million grant to build a new maintenance and operations facility to modernize public transit. The grant will finance alternative fuel technology—like hydrogen and electric systems—and create local jobs.  The Birmingham Times
