  • The Junior League of Birmingham’s Essentials Pantry provides basic supplies like toiletries, school supplies and clothing to students at five local schools. Planned events for Fall—Supplies for Success, which will fill 200 backpacks, and Winter—Pack the Pantry, which will collect coats and gloves, are set to boost support for students in need.  Bham Now

  • Today, owner Scott Charby announced that unexpected costs and licensing delays forced him to lay off six managers who were hired for the planned opening of Opulence Drag Lounge and Taqueria for Pride Month. Renovations continue at the venue (with a new video wall and remodeled kitchen) as Charby seeks a business partner to bring the project to fruition.  6 WBRC News

CRIME NEWS

  • Homewood residents keep asking for answers after 18-year-old Jabari Peoples was shot by a police officer three weeks ago outside a soccer field—protestors and Peoples’ attorney want officials to release the officer’s name, incident reports and body camera video while ALEA says the items will be shared only after its review is done.  CBS 42
  • Birmingham police arrested four suspects—Camron Hinton, Freddy Hurst III, D’Andre Watkins and Stefon Todd—after a shootout at Woodlawn High School on July 12 when officers were sent to a parking lot after reports of gunfire that seriously injured an adult woman; all suspects are held on a $30,000 bond and charged with first-degree assault as the investigation continues.  ABC 33/40
  • An independent autopsy shows that Jabari Peoples was shot in the lower back during a confrontation with a Homewood officer on June 23, and his family attorneys—led by Leroy Maxwell and Ben Crump—say they need video evidence and official records to clarify the bullet’s course.  AL.com
  • Birmingham police secured an arrest warrant for 44-year-old Arthur Eugene Shackleford for an armed robbery on July 4 when he robbed a driver at 3rd Avenue North—Richard Arrington Jr Blvd and he is held without bond in Jefferson County Jail on an unrelated charge.  ABC 33/40

CULTURE NEWS

  • Briarwood Presbyterian Church named Rev. Dr. John Scott Redd Jr. as its third senior pastor after a church vote on June 15 & his appointment was approved by the Evangel Presbytery on July 8. Redd will preach his first sermon on August 3 and brings leadership experience from Reformed Theological Seminary.  Yellowhammer News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • U.S. Representative Terri Sewell announced that Birmingham-Jefferson County Transit Authority has been awarded a $25 million grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation to build a new maintenance and operations facility for modernizing transit. The project will add alternative fuel options and create jobs across the region—delivering environmental and economic benefits.  ABC 33/40

HEALTH NEWS

  • UAB will host the annual International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses meeting from July 28 to 30 at its new Altec Styslinger Genomic Medicine and Data Sciences Building on Seventh Avenue South—this event is not open to the public. About 25 global virus experts will review hundreds of proposals to classify and name new viruses, which will help guide future public health measures and treatment strategies.  University of Alabama at Birmingham
