COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Birmingham native and New York Giants quarterback Jameis Winston will host a free Leadership Summit on July 18 at Hueytown High School from 5:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. — he will also lead the Dream Forever Youth Football Camp on July 19 for boys and girls ages 7–13 to learn basic football skills and receive mentorship.  ABC 33/40

CRIME NEWS

  • The Birmingham Police Department’s Special Operations Bureau made 25 arrests from July 7 to July 13 by charging 15 felony cases and 10 misdemeanors, seizing eight firearms and various narcotics such as 112 grams of cocaine and over 43,000 grams of marijuana—while also making 82 traffic stops, issuing 150 citations, impounding four vehicles, and assisting in 293 citizen contacts.  ABC 33/40
  • Ethan Carter—a recent high school graduate from Michigan who came to Birmingham for a sports camp—was shot during a robbery Saturday just before 6 p.m. on the northeast side while buying an online item, and he remains in hospital with injuries to his hand, arm, chest, throat and head.  CBS 42

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Negro Southern League Museum, the City of Birmingham, and the Center for Negro League Baseball Research will unveil a new exhibit honoring baseball icon Willie Mays tomorrow at 12:00 PM in City Council Chambers at Birmingham City Hall—sponsored by Jefferson County Commissioner Sheila Tyson and curated by Dr. Layton Revel.  ABC 33/40
  • KultureCity, a local nonprofit, bought the historic Powell Avenue Steam Plant for $11M—planning to break ground by the end of this year and open a sensory-inclusive hub in early 2027.  The Birmingham Times

HEALTH NEWS

  • UAB Hospital was reverified as an American College of Surgeons Level I adult trauma center— the only facility in Alabama— and has maintained this status since 1999. It treats more than 6,500 trauma patients each year and achieves a survival rate above 96 percent.  University of Alabama at Birmingham
  • UAB researchers showed that people who had a mini stroke experienced cognitive decline at the same rate as those who had a full stroke—although mini stroke patients had less immediate cognitive loss. The study used a pre-event cognitive baseline and recommended careful evaluation of stroke symptoms—since even brief events can lead to long-term changes.  University of Alabama at Birmingham

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Colette and Charles Lewis held a grand opening for the new Toasted Yolk Cafe Monday on 20th Street South in downtown Birmingham — a breakfast, brunch and lunch spot with seating for 132 — and the restaurant now welcomes guests from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. It will extend hours in the fall for private events and catering.  The Birmingham Times

  • UAB Medicine is the title sponsor of GT World Alabama, scheduled for Sept. 5 to 7 at Barber Motorsports Park and will feature the GT World Challenge America racing series. The event will benefit Teal Wings of Hope, a local nonprofit that works on ovarian cancer education, awareness & advocacy, and it will offer races, interactive fan zones & autograph sessions.  University of Alabama at Birmingham
