- ➤ DeVinci’s Italian Restaurant in Homewood will close on August 10th after 64 years in business and will turn its landmark building over to a new owner + who shares its passion for food and community ties. The owner announced the closure on Instagram on July 12th. Bham Now
- ➤ The Kiwanis Club of Birmingham announced five business leaders—Horace Corbin Day, John H. Holcomb III, Don James, John D. Johns, and Charles McCrary—will be inducted into the Birmingham Business Hall of Fame. They will be honored at an induction ceremony on Tuesday, August 19 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Harbert Center 2019 4th Avenue North and the public is invited to attend. Yellowhammer News

- ➤ It has been two years since firefighter Jordan Melton was shot at Fire Station 9 during routine maintenance in July 2023—his mother now intends to tell his story to honor his memory. Authorities charged Damien McDaniel with Melton’s murder and the attempted shooting of fellow firefighter Jamal Jones. WVTM 13
- ➤ Birmingham Police said Mardrecus Hardy, 43, was shot on July 5 on Division Avenue and taken to UAB Hospital after his family found him during a welfare check—police later confirmed he is still alive despite earlier reports of his death. 6 WBRC News
- ➤ Over the past several days, officers reported a rise in phone and email scams where callers falsely threatened victims with arrest if money was not paid at retail kiosks such as CVS—one person was nearly tricked into sending $2,000 to avoid jail. Law enforcement reminded residents that government agencies never use Bitcoin or gift cards for fines and urged anyone warned in this manner to hang up and call the police. Yellowhammer News

- ➤ On Saturday, Birmingham-area firefighters from Hoover, Vestavia Hills — and Mountain Brook were deployed to Kerr County, Texas to help search and rescue victims after the Fourth of July weekend floods. The deployment may last up to two weeks while Tuscaloosa first responders were also activated to support the effort. CBS 42
- ➤ State Rep. Juandalynn Givan (D-Birmingham) rejected claims on Saturday during a CNN interview that her sponsored legislation blocked ALEA from releasing bodycam footage of Jabari Peoples, fatally shot at Homewood Soccer Park on June 23. She said her bill was meant to open opportunities for families and noted that she worked with (20-something other legislators) while planning to call ALEA to allow an initial review of the footage. 1819 News
