COMMUNITY NEWS

  • More than 800 students took part in the annual Restore Games event held at the Crossplex in Birmingham yesterday to learn nonviolent ways to reduce gun violence. Program manager Ant Skiwilliams said community volunteers and local leaders are inspiring change by encouraging dialogue instead of using weapons — and they plan to host the event again next year.  WVTM 13

BUSINESS NEWS

  • More than 50 new businesses opened in Birmingham in 2025 as of July 10th—ranging from cafes and restaurants to retail shops. Several new ventures will launch later this summer—bringing fresh dining and shopping choices to the community.  Bham Now

CRIME NEWS

  • It has been one year since four people were killed and 10 injured in a mass shooting at a Birmingham birthday party near Trendsetters Lounge Event Center—where a judge has padlocked the venue—and the city is suing the business for operating without a license.  WVTM 13

CULTURE NEWS

  • McWane Science Center will host a birthday event for Itty Bitty Magic City on August 2 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. to celebrate 10 years with special programs for children 6 and under+ additional science-based activities planned for older kids and adults throughout the museum.  Bham Now
  • KultureCity, a local nonprofit, bought the historic Powell Avenue Steam Plant for $11 million and will turn it into a sensory-inclusive hub by 2027. The group plans to break ground by the end of this year—adding a play area, exhibit hall, and green space to honor the building’s past and serve new needs.  WVTM 13

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Tarrant City Council fired former fire chief Jason Rickels after an investigation found that he swatted at a firefighter’s groin, used demeaning language, and tried to stop a complaint; staff said his actions made them feel fearful. The council vote—four out of five members—came after multiple interviews reported a hostile work environment—leading to his termination in a town near Birmingham.  AL.com
  • The Alabama Department of Transportation announced that starting at 12 a.m. on July 21, southbound ramps at Chalkville Mountain Road will be closed for an ongoing I-59 construction project from I-459 to Chalkville Mountain Road—motorists are urged to use alternate routes to avoid traffic delays.  ABC 33/40
  • Homewood officials filed a response on Friday asking a judge to dismiss a petition by Jabari Peoples’ family that seeks to release video and reports from his June 23 shooting at Homewood Soccer Park— the filing argues that the documents are already preserved for an ongoing investigation. A hearing on Aug. 4 will decide if the evidence will be released.  AL.com
