CRIME NEWS

  • Attorney Ben Crump and the family of 18-year-old Peoples say they will not accept the state’s refusal to release the officer's body-camera video after Peoples was fatally shot in Homewood on June 23—police claim he grabbed a gun during a scuffle but family members and an eyewitness dispute that—and they demand full transparency as an investigation remains ongoing.  The Birmingham Times
  • Attorneys for the family of 18-year-old Jabari Peoples demanded the immediate release of unredacted police body camera footage after he was fatally shot in Homewood; protestors held signs (like 'Justice for Jabari Peoples') as the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (citing an ongoing investigation) refused to share the video.  6 WBRC News

  • On Tuesday, the Birmingham Youth and Young Adult Fellowship Choir won the Golden Buzzer on America's Got Talent—its performance blended hip hop with a classic hymn while director Akheem Lee emphasized the city’s civil rights legacy and local talent. The group, formed in 2015 to give back to the community, is one of 10 acts eligible for the buzzer this season.  AL.com

  • Today, Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin declared a local emergency for nearly 15,000 overgrown properties that pose health and safety risks after heavy rains. The city has allocated $3 million for weed abatement—using 18 private contractors over the next 45 days—to address the issue.  ABC 33/40
