ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Mountain Brook Mayor Stewart Welch confirmed that 8-year-old Sarah Marsh, a student at Cherokee Bend Elementary School who was camping at Camp Mystic, died in a flash flood in Texas on Friday — the community is now heartbroken over her loss.  CBS 42
  • Officials confirmed that eight-year-old Sarah Marsh, a Mountain Brook student at Cherokee Bend Elementary, died in a flash flood that struck Kerrville on Friday, July 4—search and recovery efforts continue.  ABC 33/40
  • Two Alabama pedestrians were fatally struck by a car on Perdido Key Drive around 3:00 a.m. Saturday in Escambia County, Florida— a 20-year-old man from Hoover and a 20-year-old woman from Calera died at the scene while the 47-year-old driver from Pensacola was unharmed.  ABC 33/40

CRIME NEWS

  • On July 3, a Dollar General worker was shot before 9 p.m. during a holdup at the 2314 Warrior Road store in Five Points West—police said two male suspects stole about $600 and fled while the injured worker, shot in the torso, is expected to recover.  AL.com
  • Birmingham Police are asking the public to help identify two armed male suspects who robbed a Dollar General at 2413 Warrior Road around 10 p.m. on July 3—stealing about $600 and injuring a clerk with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound before fleeing the scene.  CBS 42

CULTURE NEWS

  • AL.com journalists will host Birmingham Dreams, a free interactive event on July 24 at Woodlawn Theater—featuring John Archibald, a two-time Pulitzer Prize winner, gun violence prevention reporter Alaina Bookman, and Birmingham Poet Laureate Salaam Green as they share community stories for the Beyond the Violence project. Attendees will hear firsthand how residents are sharing their hopes and plans to improve local neighborhoods.  AL.com

HEALTH NEWS

  • Jennifer Thompson, president of Safer Birth in Bama, said her organization is teaming up with community health partners to improve prenatal care in counties that lack labor and delivery services and face high maternal mortality rates. The group will host a Block Party and a ticketed Mom Prom fundraiser on July 18 at Singin’ River Brewing Co to educate the public + encourage better access to care.  1819 News
  • DCH Health System and the University of Alabama launched Supportive Care at the Lewis and Faye Manderson Cancer Center to offer personalized help for patients facing serious illness—this program also gives 350 nursing students real clinical experience and will study care outcomes for possible expansion.  Yellowhammer News
