BUSINESS NEWS

  • Birmingham is hosting the Sloss Tech Conference — spanning from June 25 to 27 — as sixteen companies gather to show how technology is changing everyday areas like food and retail. Deon Gordon, CEO of TechBirmingham, said he plans to use local innovation to create jobs and reshape the city’s future in light of its civil rights legacy.  WVTM 13

  • Body-worn camera footage held by ALEA shows that on Monday night at 9:30 p.m. in Homewood a marked officer shot suspect Jabari Peoples after he reached for a gun during a traffic stop—Peoples died at UAB Hospital and his family now demands a full independent investigation.  1819 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Aliceville Mayor Terrence Windham called for transparency from ALEA and Homewood Mayor Alex Wyatt after 18-year-old Jabari Peoples was fatally shot by a Homewood officer earlier this week—his family maintains that he was unarmed and compliant.  WVTM 13
  • Alabama municipal elections will take place in August as voters choose new mayors, council members, and school board members, and candidates must submit applications by July 24 at 5 p.m.—cities like Birmingham, Hoover, and Irondale are updating candidate lists before the vote.  CBS 42
  • At a Birmingham Water Works meeting this week, board members voted 5—2 to amend the Certificate of Incorporation so the utility is now known as The City of Birmingham Regional Water Works doing business as Central Alabama Water, with suburban appointees supporting the change while two city nominees opposed it.  1819 News
  • Hoover's mayoral race is set between longtime mayor Frank Brocato and police chief Nick Derzis — they will face off in the election on Aug. 26. Brocato started his public service in the fire department in 1973 while Derzis became police chief in 2005.  CBS 42

  • Professor Timothy Gawne from UAB School of Optometry received a $1.9 million grant from the National Eye Institute to study the rise in nearsightedness.
