  • The newly renovated Willie Mays Park in Fairfield was unveiled on Juneteenth, June 19, with a new turf baseball diamond, scoreboard, and freshly painted dugouts — a joint effort by Major League Baseball and the local community. State Senator Merika Coleman announced she secured $325,000 from the state to fund additional park improvements and community programs.  Bham Now

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Rashad Jackson, a nine year old rising fourth grader, drowned on Saturday when he fell from a platform at a rock quarry in Midfield while fishing with his cousin and grandmother—his cousin jumped in to try to save him but both bodies were recovered Sunday morning.  AL.com

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Popular Bluff Park sandwich shop The Electric opened its new location, The Electric East, in a renovated former Tropicaleo space in Avondale (June 24) and now serves sandwiches, snacks, and salads daily from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.; founders Ben and Laura Smith took the opportunity to expand their community service with this additional spot.  Bham Now

CRIME NEWS

  • Jabari Latrell Peoples, an 18-year-old from Aliceville, was shot near Homewood Soccer Park at 9:30 p.m. on Monday during an altercation with a Homewood officer when he reportedly reached for a gun and died at UAB Hospital at 10:06 a.m.  CBS 42
  • Ibraheem Yazeed, accused of kidnapping and killing Aniah Blanchard in 2019, was moved from Lee County jail to the Macon County Courthouse yesterday—Judge Young asked both sides to submit details for a new gag order by Friday while the defense aimed to delay trial until May next year.  6 WBRC News
  • Birmingham Police say Tyjuan Phillips (40) turned himself in at Jefferson County Jail in Bessemer on June 23 and is charged with capital murder after investigators found Calvin Dewayne Ball’s body in a partially burned vehicle on the 4300 block of Eli Avenue Southwest.  6 WBRC News
  • Homewood police arrested 28-year-old Jelani Adom Gooden from Salem on June 24th after DNA evidence linked him to a November 2024 rape on Aspen Court, and he now faces charges of first-degree rape and sodomy, first-degree sexual abuse with a $15,000 bond, and third-degree assault with a $6,000 bond.  ABC 33/40

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Birmingham City Council approved Mayor Woodfin's $591 million budget for Fiscal Year 2026, which will fund neighborhood repairs, police support, and youth programs. The budget takes effect on July 1 and uses federal and local funds (including money from the Rescue Plan Act) to improve streets and safety in our city.  ABC 33/40

SPORTS NEWS

  • More than 8,500 first responders from nearly 80 countries, including 700 from Alabama, are gathering in Birmingham for the 2025 World Police and Fire Games as part of 1,600 medal events in over 60 sports across central Alabama. The opening ceremony is set for 6 p.m. on June 27 at Legacy Arena at the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex—followed by the closing ceremony at 4:30 p.m. on July 6 at City Walk—bringing together competitors on a shared global stage.  The Birmingham Times
