BUSINESS NEWS

  • Birmingham was home to five of the top 20 U.S. healthcare general contractors in 2024 as reported by Modern Healthcare. Brasfield and Gorrie led the ranking with 2.7 billion dollars in completed projects + Robins and Morton, Hoar Construction, Doster Construction, and M.J. CRIME NEWS

  • A man was found shot to death in a car in west Birmingham & police are investigating the scene & no arrest has been made.  6 WBRC News
  • Between June 16 and June 22, the Birmingham Police Department's Special Enforcement Division arrested 29 people—20 for felonies and 9 for misdemeanors—and seized nine firearms and various narcotics as part of its ongoing effort to fight crime.  ABC 33/40

  • Coca-Cola Amphitheater opened today and local music fans enjoyed the inaugural show with live music and clear sound quality. The new venue aims to boost entertainment in our city.  6 WBRC News

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Birmingham gas prices rose by 8.1 cents in the past week to an average of $2.84 per gallon, according to GasBuddy’s survey of 550 stations. Prices increased 16.2 cents from a month ago but remain 24.8 cents lower than last year & the national average climbed 9.7 cents to $3.18 per gallon.  ABC 33/40

  • The Hillsboro School in Helena offers a unique education that blends Montessori teaching with outdoor, farm-based learning & hands-on projects. ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Birmingham roads (especially on Richard Arrington Boulevard near Red Mountain) are at risk as extreme heat softens asphalt and leads to buckling and alligator cracking. Chris Nicholson with Jefferson County Roads and Transportation advised drivers to slow down and be alert (while crews inspect dangerous pavement conditions) as temperatures soar.  WVTM 13

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Birmingham’s McArthur School, closed since 1997, became a local eyesore after asbestos removal work began following a $178,000 approval in May—city actions that included fencing and abatement banners—raising concerns among neighborhood leaders. The mayor’s office said the demolition reference applied only to the interior work, though some community members feared the building might be torn down.  WVTM 13
  • Jefferson County unveiled its state-of-the-art coroner’s office at a new $30 million facility on Leaf Lake Boulevard, replacing the small space at the old Cooper Green Hospital. The 32,000‑square‑foot facility will serve the county for 30 years—providing expanded examination space, modern technology, and capacity for mass casualty events.  AL.com

  • More than a year after Birmingham-Southern College closed its doors due to financial troubles, the 192-acre campus remains unsold despite offers from Alabama A&M and Miles College, leaving the community uncertain about its future.
