  • The city of Birmingham will host its fourth annual Mental Health Awareness Day on Friday, June 27 at Linn Park from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and will offer free screenings, mental health resources & wellness activities to reduce stigma and support community care.  6 WBRC News
  • Birmingham officers had a water fight with local children during an outreach event today—sparking smiles and friendly interactions among community members.  6 WBRC News

CRIME NEWS

  • Birmingham Police have issued a Critical Missing Person alert for 78-year-old James Hatcher, who was last seen on the 1500 Block of Woodland Avenue Southwest and has dementia with difficulty walking; he is described as (5-foot-7, 140 pounds, brown eyes, gray hair) and was wearing a black jacket, green pants and black Nike shoes.  6 WBRC News
  • Carl Frog Price, 66, a Leeds math tutor, was arrested in Shelby County on June 18 on new sex abuse charges related to a 2001 incident—he is held on a $115,000 bond and faces court dates on July 8 for an earlier indictment and July 10 for the new charge.  ABC 33/40

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • ADCNR staff from Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries and State Parks recently completed an ACA Instructor Certification Workshop at Lake Guntersville to learn paddle-sport safety and techniques. The training, funded by the Alabama Conservation and Natural Resources Foundation and donations from a major sports retailer, will let the officers teach safe paddling practices to ADCNR colleagues and the public.  Yellowhammer News
  • Brian K. Rice, an engineer and Ensley Business Alliance president, entered the Birmingham mayor race by holding a kickoff event at noon today at 610 19th St. Ensley, and he will challenge incumbent Mayor Randall Woodfin in the Aug. 26 election—promising to support local businesses and under-resourced neighborhoods.  AL.com

HEALTH NEWS

  • Medical experts warn that traveling by plane or car for more than four hours could raise the risk of blood clots, which can cause leg pain and swelling—if a clot travels to the lung, it can be very dangerous. UAB Vein Clinic director Dr. Marc Passman advises taking breaks, staying hydrated, and checking with a doctor if you have risk factors.  6 WBRC News
