  • Local entrepreneur Jamaine Stanton has launched the Black Business Traffic app to help people find 350 Black-owned stores in Birmingham. The review-based tool—designed for physical stores—will expand to Montgomery and Huntsville by year’s end.  6 WBRC News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Bryan Stevenson—founder of the Equal Justice Initiative—spoke on CBS 42 Morning News about how Juneteenth marks a turning point in American history by ending centuries of slavery and reshaping society. He said that learning the full story of this day can help us build a future free of the kind of injustice seen in the past.  CBS 42
  • Birmingham’s first poet laureate Salaam Green released her new book The Other Revival on Juneteenth, which features poems inspired by descendants of Black enslaved people and white descendants of a central Alabama plantation (she gathered insights from her time as poet-in-residence at Wallace House Plantation). Her verses honor heritage and healing (she captures the echoes of a shared history in each poem).  WBHM

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Japan-based Nippon Steel finalized a $14.9-billion acquisition of U.S. Steel on June 18 — a deal that will bring up to $500 million for improvements at the Fairfield facility in Jefferson County and about $11 billion in investments by 2028. The merger aims to strengthen Alabama's steel industry and maintain U.S. Steel's American identity while protecting over 100,000 jobs nationwide.  Yellowhammer News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Nearly 24,000 Alabama students have been approved to receive state-funded education savings accounts through the CHOOSE Act this year, with almost half in private schools and nearly a third home educated. Families earning less than 300% of the federal poverty level must submit enrollment verification by June 30 to begin receiving funds on July 1 — a move that supports eligible students for the 2025–26 school year.  Yellowhammer News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Councilman Hunter Williams apologized at a city meeting for Urban Alchemy’s display of a tent with a sign reading 'No f-ckery' at East Lake Farmers Market—upsetting local residents—adding that the funded nonprofit must follow Birmingham values and stop showing the slogan on City Hall shirts. The councilman said such actions must align with the expectations of taxpayers who support its work.  1819 News

SPORTS NEWS

  • Major League Baseball came back to Birmingham on Juneteenth at America's Oldest Ballpark even though it rained a bit, and players like CC Sabathia and Ryan Howard impressed local fans. Roy Wood Jr. and MLB Together celebrated Black baseball history and marked the event with a restored field (at Willie Mays Park in Fairfield) to honor the sport’s roots.  WVTM 13
  • Officials from Major League Baseball planned to unveil the new Willie Mays Park in Fairfield today but cut the ceremony short because of rain. The park was damaged by a tornado in 2017 and has been refurbished by MLB and minor league teams—Rep. Merika Coleman announced that $325,000 from the state budget will fund phase two upgrades.  WVTM 13
  • Alabama and Auburn released their SEC basketball schedules for next season showing tough matchups with road games at Florida and Tennessee and home games against Kentucky. Alabama will play Auburn and Mississippi State twice while Auburn faces Ole Miss and Arkansas in an 18-game format.  Yellowhammer News
