- ➤ Jimmy Smith, 92, keeps his Collegeville neighborhood neat even as the city-owned property next door—his mother's home sold nearly 20 years ago for a road project that never happened—remains run down. He urges the city to act soon to fix the site and help restore the community. AL.com
- ➤ Today, local leaders including Freshwater Land Trust, Congresswoman Terri Sewell, Birmingham officials and the Jefferson County Commission announced the $1.1 million purchase of an inactive rail line to create a rail to trail that is 4.5 miles long and will link west Birmingham residents to Red Mountain Park, the three mile High Ore Line Greenway — and the Birmingham Crossplex. The project also moves the metro area closer to a loop more than 36 miles long connecting Birmingham, Fairfield, Homewood and Irondale. Bham Now

- ➤ An Alabama man accused of 18 murders including two mass shootings will go to trial in April while his attorneys worry about selecting fair jurors from a city still reeling from last year's record violence—Jefferson County District Judge Shanta Owens also ruled that prosecutors may pursue the death penalty. - ➤ Birmingham’s new Coca-Cola Amphitheater (at 2350 15th Ave North) will open with comedian Matt Rife performing on Sunday, June 22. The venue offers on-site parking and nearby gravel lots for more than 6,000 guests and a tram service (from Protective Stadium) with 9,100 seats available for upcoming shows. WVTM 13

- ➤ Birmingham launched its first sustainability plan during a project launch phase that offered workshops for residents to share ideas, with the final session held Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Social Venture. The plan targets environmental justice challenges and aims to boost economic growth and quality of life — while supporting a regional effort to reduce greenhouse emissions. WVTM 13

- ➤ Since November 2023, Sophia Leverson has rebuilt the Sickle Cell Disease Association of America—Central Alabama by adding new programs and services to help patients in 13 counties, including an urban garden that offers fresh produce and better transportation for rural areas. The 27th Annual Magic City Sickle Cell Walk took place on June 14, and she will expand efforts with an arts therapy program in August and an open house on September 9. The Birmingham Times
- ➤ Mathew Knowles, father of Beyoncé and a male breast cancer survivor, has partnered with the Breast Cancer Research Foundation of Alabama to urge early testing among men while his niece, Dr. Anjanetta Foster, a Birmingham physician, shares her family’s experience—both stressing the importance of early detection and the role of the specialty car tag in funding local research.
