ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A 41-year-old McCalla woman, Amanda Lee Brulez, died in Bessemer on June 13 after being struck by a vehicle while standing outside her car following a two-vehicle crash on I-59/20 — Bessemer police are investigating the incident.  6 WBRC News

CRIME NEWS

  • A person was found shot to death in an alley on Terrace G in west Birmingham—police are investigating the incident.  6 WBRC News
  • Jemarien Zachius Goree, 21, was convicted of intentional murder for his role in the 2022 shooting death of Carver High School senior Dwaine Thomas, who was fatally shot during an altercation when Goree provided the gun to the shooter & he remains in custody pending sentencing on Aug. 11.  AL.com

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Ivey signed legislation to make Juneteenth an official state holiday, and Birmingham will observe the day on June 19 with a Freedom Day Parade at Kelly Ingram Park. The National Juneteenth Observance Foundation of Alabama will hold the parade at 9 a.m. Thursday while the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute hosts free events starting at 11 a.m.  The Birmingham Times
  • Birmingham is partnering with Miles College and the Institute of Research Social Justice in Action for three violence reduction programs this summer—Rise Up Birmingham, Flipping the Game, and the Community Practitioner in Residence Program—that will give teens, young adults and community leaders paid roles and training from June 30 to August 1. The programs are part of the city’s broader Community Safety Initiative.  6 WBRC News
  • Work has started in Highland Park on a $5.9 million drainage improvement project to ease flooding along 26th Street South between Caldwell Park and The Nick — road users near UAB St. Vincent’s, The Garage, and local landmarks should expect travel delays until Summer 2026.  Bham Now
  • Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall announced on Monday a nationwide $7.4 billion settlement with Purdue Pharma and the Sackler family to resolve opioid litigation. The settlement will provide up to $75 million to state and local governments over 15 years (with most funds distributed in the first three years) and ends the Sacklers’ control of Purdue while awaiting bankruptcy court approval.  1819 News
