GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Mayor Woodfin announced at Legion Field that the Birmingham Youth Sports League will launch this summer with youth football and cheerleading and plans to offer free uniforms, training, and security to children ages 5—12 in a public-private partnership with a $500,000 city investment. The league will also provide academic mentorship and life skills training to build character and support local youth.  The Birmingham Times
  • The Birmingham Police Department announced its plan for a safer summer 2025—using more patrols, surveillance and curfew enforcement—to reduce crime in busy areas and protect community spaces. The plan sets targeted operations in June and July that may extend into August as officials work with state and local agencies.  ABC 33/40

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Birmingham’s Pepper Place will add new tenants over the coming months following Sloss Real Estate’s Friday announcement; interior design firm Kravet will open its showroom on June 23 (Alchemy Spa & Wellness is expected to open in July and Schumacher will launch its shared showroom in October), and Chalker Group has joined the third floor of the Dr. Pepper Building.  AL.com

SPORTS NEWS

  • Rickwood Field will host the East-West Classic on June 19 at 12:00 p.m., where 30 former players will compete in a five-inning exhibition game. The East team is led by Chris Young with Alabama native Jake Peavy while the West team is captained by CC Sabathia following his MLB Hall-of-Fame selection — the game features players with 400 combined Major League seasons and multiple awards.  Bham Now
  • More than 8,500 first responders from over 70 countries will gather in Birmingham for the World Police and Fire Games, which will host over 60 sports from traditional events to unique contests over 11 days from June 27 to July 6. The opening ceremony will be held at the BJCC Legacy Arena — the closing ceremony will take place at City Walk — with competitions set across Central Alabama.  WVTM 13
