ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A Center Point woman was killed in a multi-vehicle crash Sunday afternoon at 2:14 p.m. on the 1100 block of 42nd Place North in Birmingham—54-year-old Cheryl Denise Irby died from injuries after her vehicle was involved in the accident.  CBS 42
  • A Birmingham man, Isaac Summers—45—died around 10:30 p.m. Saturday when his car hit a fallen tree at Ensley 5 Points West Avenue amid severe storms; police are investigating the crash.  WVTM 13
  • Early Monday morning, June 9, Irondale police rescued four Moody High School football players from the Cahaba River after their inflatable raft malfunctioned, prompting a multi-agency search with drones and a helicopter that found the boys as they walked along the bank—police described their survival as a miracle and confirmed all are safe.  6 WBRC News

  • The long-vacant Mall at Westlake in Bessemer will become the Marvel City Business Park with an investment of over $10 million from the Ohio-based Range Light Investment Partners—construction starts this year with business suites set to open by the end of 2025.  ABC 33/40

CRIME NEWS

  • During the week of June 2 to 8, Birmingham police arrested 68 people in a crackdown to boost public safety—44 were charged with felonies and 24 with misdemeanors, with officers also seizing firearms, drugs, cash, and impounding vehicles.  ABC 33/40
  • A Birmingham man identified as 38-year-old Anthony DeAngelo Avila was fatally shot during a weekend shooting on the 1000 block of 2nd Avenue North after a verbal argument began at the Church of the Reconciler—police reported the state has been notified.  CBS 42

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Friday, Attorney General Steve Marshall appealed a May 8 ruling by a three-judge panel that found the 2023 congressional redistricting map violated the Voting Rights Act — the state defends the map approved in 2023 even after a special master redrew it for the 2024 elections — and legal challenges continue.  1819 News

HEALTH NEWS

  • The American Red Cross will host two blood drives this summer to help local hospitals, with the Boots+Badges drive on June 18 at Hoover City Hall from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. where the Hoover Police Department+Hoover Fire Department will compete for a trophy; the Home Run Hero drive will be held at Regions Field on July 8-9 and will offer donors a Red Cross T-shirt, two Birmingham Barons tickets, and Red Cross sunglasses.  Bham Now
  • In May, 35 local restaurants earned food service scores above 95 during inspections by the Jefferson County Department of Health—establishments like Bayonet, Slutty Vegan and Eugene’s Hot Chicken were included among the over 100 sites inspected.  Bham Now
