  • Sharon Ellis Bowie, 71, died after a house fire in Birmingham Thursday morning—she was rescued from her home on the 1200 block of 4th Terrace West and pronounced dead at UAB Hospital while investigators look into the cause.  6 WBRC News

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Atlantic Aviation has begun a $40 million redevelopment project at Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport that will add a new executive FBO terminal, two hangars, a fuel farm, and extra ramp space. The project, scheduled for completion in early 2027, will include energy-saving features such as solar panels — a plan developed with close collaboration between airport and city leadership.  AL.com

CULTURE NEWS

  • Thousands of people are expected to gather at Linn Park today for the Steel City Smooth Jazz Festival—drawing locals and visitors who travel from afar to enjoy the music; festival gates will reopen at noon today and performances will continue on Sunday.  CBS 42

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Alumnus J. Frank Barefield Jr. pledged $35 million to allow UA to name its College of Arts and Sciences, which serves over 9,000 students in 80 programs. The UA System Board of Trustees approved the gift on June 6 — the endowment will fund research and support academic initiatives.  Yellowhammer News

  • On Thursday, Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin, representatives of the Benoit Group, and Housing Authority officials held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to open Southtown Senior, a 143-unit affordable senior housing development replacing old red brick apartments. Residents such as Norma Parks, who has lived in Southtown public housing since 1970, now wait for reassignment as demolition of the older units continues.  AL.com
