Birmingham's East Lake Library reopened today after a four-year closure with new features such as a new elevator, a foyer, updated restrooms and a renovated auditorium and stage—changes that give people better access to books and programs—and Mayor Randall Woodfin said the upgrades make the library a stronger part of our community.

Today, Birmingham—home to diverse community events—hosts 18 weekend events that range from live theater and baseball games to food festivals and pride celebrations from today through June 8.

Highlights include Red Mountain Theatre’s Frozen production today, a Birmingham Barons game at Regions Field and Zoo Brews at Birmingham Zoo.

Birmingham police arrested 25-year-old Nakia Wayne Douglas on Tuesday after a stabbing in the Dolomite neighborhood (the victim was taken to UAB Hospital with life-threatening injuries) and charged him with attempted murder (he is held on a $60,000 bond at Jefferson County Jail).

On Wednesday, immigration advocates said several immigrants attending routine check-in meetings for the federal Intensive Supervision Appearance Program were detained at ICE offices in Homewood and Gadsden — one local resident reported her mother, who had attended appointments regularly for 8 years, was taken while she waited in the car. Reports noted some witnesses saw up to 50 detainees at Birmingham’s ICE office and 18 in Gadsden.

Endeavour Group Real Estate is turning USA Economy Lodge into 226 affordable housing units while hiring Birmingham artist Rob Clifton to paint ten murals on the two vacant buildings.

The first 60 units will be complete by the end of the month – Clifton’s artwork will be finished by August.
