COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Jimmie Hale Mission is planning to build a 98-bed low barrier emergency shelter in downtown Birmingham across the street from its current recovery facility for men. The shelter will include showers, laundry facilities, and a dog run, and the organization will launch a $4 million capital campaign with construction set to begin after the first of the year.  CBS 42

  • Birmingham Police are searching for 8-year-old Damon Moon Jr., who was last seen Tuesday at Ninth Avenue North and Center Street in a blue/green 2012 Ford Fusion — he wore a faded pink/red Alabama team shirt and gray champion shorts.  CBS 42
  • Birmingham Police arrested suspect Jamarcus Liray Olive (35) after fatally shooting Andreika Robinson outside her home on Tuesday at 6:10 a.m.; officers took him into custody within eight hours and a capital murder warrant was issued.  CBS 42
  • On October 25th, 2021, 68-year-old Sterling Jones left his tree business for a trip that took him to the Birmingham Race Course and a casino in Mississippi but never returned, and his family now seeks justice as Crimestoppers offers a $20,000 reward for tips leading to an arrest while no charges have been filed.  ABC 33/40

CULTURE NEWS

  • Three streets near Linn Park will be closed for the Steel City Smooth Jazz Festival that runs from Friday, June 6 through Sunday, June 8—Birmingham City Hall will close early on Friday for festival setup as barricade installation and vendor load-ins begin to manage downtown traffic and parking.  ABC 33/40
  • Birmingham will host 71 local concerts in June, including tribute events honoring the late musician Jason Hamric and performances at key venues across the city—events start today and continue through later dates with ticket prices from free to modest fees.  Bham Now

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Today, state and local leaders unveiled a new high-tech logistics hub at the Port of Birmingham built in a public-private partnership with Watco—spanning 25,000 square feet and expected to boost regional freight movement with a direct economic impact of $1.2 million and $8 million in ripple effects while operations launch in the coming weeks.  ABC 33/40

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Kai Frazier founded Kai XR, an education platform using virtual reality to bring virtual field trips and hands-on 3D projects to Birmingham schools and underserved areas in Alabama. The platform is already sparking deeper learning in classrooms and Frazier is preparing a VR film project — a collaboration with the Civil Rights Institute set to debut at Sloss.Tech on June 26.  The Birmingham Times
