BUSINESS NEWS

  • Post Office Pies will close its last Mountain Brook location on Sunday, June 29. Chef John Hall said the lease costs—$14,000 to $15,000 per month—forced the decision even as the restaurant earned national praise for its local ingredients and tasty pizzas.  Bham Now
  • Taziki’s Mediterranean Café now serves a new location at Hoover’s Knox Square at 5880 Elsie Road, Building D-1 where customers can enjoy Greek-Mediterranean meals including gyros, soups and salads. The restaurant operates Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. and on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.—it is the chain’s 13th spot in the area and 24th statewide.  AL.com

CRIME NEWS

  • Kelvontae Wallace, a 26-year-old Pell City man and convicted felon, pleaded guilty Tuesday to illegally possessing a firearm and a machinegun—charges linked to a December 15 shooting at an Orange #1 gas station in Talladega and a January 2 arrest when he tried to flee.  CBS 42
  • Three people were arrested in Forestdale on May 30 when a search warrant led police to seize drugs, cash and three weapons—33-year-old Tebyrius Davonte Watts faces drug trafficking charges while Angela Hubbard and Jacob Tyler Cagle are out on bond.  6 WBRC News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UAB held a ribbon cutting on June 3 for the new Frances and Miller Gorrie Hall, which now serves as the School of Engineering's home. The 110,000-square-foot building, built with support from the Gorrie family and Brasfield and Gorrie, will host classes this fall to train future engineers.  University of Alabama at Birmingham
  • Renovations at old North Roebuck School near completion will convert the building into an annex for Martha Gaskins Elementary to house Pre-K through first grade students across the street—Birmingham City Schools said the $12 million project is designed to add 21 classrooms and enhanced facilities to meet growing early education needs in East Birmingham.  WVTM 13

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Birmingham residents are invited to join free workshops today (Birmingham Botanical Gardens from 6-8 p.m. and at other venues) to help shape the city's first Sustainability Plan by sharing ideas on environmental, social, and economic challenges. The Office of Resilience and Sustainability will use the feedback to finalize the plan early 2026 while a related regional plan is expected by December.  The Birmingham Times
  • Birmingham Police are offering free steering wheel locks to Kia and Hyundai owners while supplies last. Eligible residents must show proof of residency and vehicle ownership to pick up their lock at one of four precincts (North, South, East, or West).  ABC 33/40
