  • Six new Birmingham businesses are opening this week—Nmosa Fabrics, Top Dog daycare, Joseph’s Table, The Dive Bar, Karma’s Kitchen debuting this summer, and NOIR Café on June 10—while Red Lobster and Rocky Ridge Hardware closed on May 25 and May 30 in Vestavia Hills.  Bham Now

CULTURE NEWS

  • Birmingham native Pynk Beard will appear on America’s Got Talent as the new season airs Tuesday, June 2 at 7 p.m. on NBC, with WVTM-TV on channel 13 carrying the show locally — he aims to showcase his full artistry.  Bham Now
  • Forty-five women are competing for the crown as Miss Alabama 2026. The outgoing titleholder will crown the new winner Saturday, June 6 at Samford University’s Wright Center in Birmingham.  AL.com
  • Central Alabama Pride unveiled a full schedule of Pride Week events in Birmingham from June 1-14, marking its 48th anniversary. Highlights include the Pride Drag Brunch at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 13 at Mable's on 3rd and the Pride Parade at 8 p.m. Saturday along 7th Avenue South.  ABC 33/40
  • Southbound Food Festival in Birmingham opened Early Bird ticket sales for its 2026 event scheduled Sept. 18-27, urging guests to secure seats before tickets sell out (limited early pricing is available until July 1). ECONOMY NEWS

  • Birmingham gas prices dropped 17.9 cents in one week to an average of $3.92 per gallon, based on GasBuddy’s survey of 550 stations. The report shows prices ranged from $3.53 to $4.29 per gallon as drivers see some relief at the pump.  ABC 33/40

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Birmingham-based NaphCare signed a $500 million emergency contract with the Department of Corrections on Apr. 29 — its service record elsewhere has prompted Rep. England to say the contract could face review soon.  AL.com

HEALTH NEWS

  • Pediatric experts from UAB and Children's of Alabama stress water safety for young children by advising parents to keep children within arm's reach (touch supervision) and secure pools and bathtubs, as drowning is a leading risk for ages 1-4; they recommend early swim lessons and CPR training.  University of Alabama at Birmingham

  • Alabama baseball won the Tuscaloosa Regional with three straight victories last weekend and now advances to the Super Regionals, where the best-of-three series will start Friday. The Tide awaits its opponent and needs one more win to move closer to the College World Series.  Yellowhammer News
  • Birmingham native sprinter Jayla Kirkland trains at UAB for the 2027 World Championships and the 2028 Olympic Games, continuing her record from high school to the international stage.
