COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Junior League of Birmingham served over 10,000 people last year with 313 volunteers and $235,700 invested in 24 community projects across the city—helping improve education, health, safety and basic needs. The group also honored its changemakers with awards that recognized their efforts to strengthen the community.  Bham Now
  • Starting in June, the Community Food Bank of Central Alabama will offer free, prepared meals and snacks to children 18 and under and provide food box distributions to families with children across central Alabama. Meals are served on weekdays and food boxes include snack packs, fresh produce, and frozen protein — all designed to help ease summer food insecurity.  6 WBRC News
  • Highland Park Golf Course has held a free Honor the Brave clinic for military veterans since 2019—offering lessons from experienced professionals; the clinic will take a summer break before returning in August.  6 WBRC News

  • Sloss Tech 2025, the South’s leading tech and innovation conference, is scheduled to take place downtown from June 25 through 27.   • Beloved Birmingham music figure Jason Hamric died at 53, and his work with Substrate Radio helped shape the local music scene—he will be honored at an event in Saturn on June 1 at 4 p.m. where community members can share photos and memories.  Bham Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A new Niche report ranked Alabama’s top school districts for 2025 by weighing academics, teacher quality, graduation rates, and student experience. Homewood City Schools claimed the top spot followed closely by Madison City Schools and Auburn City Schools.  Yellowhammer News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Homewood Fire Department installed a new $3,500 HAAS Digital Alert System on its firetrucks to send pop-up alerts through apps like Waze and Google maps when an emergency vehicle is nearby — the system gives drivers more time to slow down and pull over to avoid accidents.  CBS 42
  • The outgoing Birmingham Water Works Board approved contracts for key management positions (each with a minimum annual salary of $215,904) on their final day after Senate Bill 330 removed the previous board. The new board, which first met on May 15, will review more invoices and bids at its May 29 work session.  ABC 33/40
