  • The 2025 Regions Tradition concluded on May 18 with over $24M donated to local charities and more than $3.5M allocated to Children’s Hospital of Alabama to purchase advanced equipment like the da Vinci surgical robot + host adaptive golf clinics that promoted inclusive participation.   • Birmingham’s East Lake Branch Library will reopen on Monday, June 2 at 10:00 a.m. at #5 Oporto Madrid Boulevard after extensive renovations added a new elevator, foyer, restrooms, storage space, an emergency stairwell and a revamped auditorium—upgrades that boost its service for the community.  ABC 33/40
  • STRIVE Birmingham's Fresh Start program helped returning citizens gain job skills + holistic support through case management and training partnerships with Jefferson State Community College.   • The City of Birmingham is hosting Community Studio Week from June 10 to 14 at Legion Field, where residents will share input for a $21M project that will add new sidewalks, trails and mobility hubs along key streets in historic neighborhoods.   • Former Killen officer Jarrod Gailen Webster was sentenced to 15 years in prison for sexually assaulting a woman during a traffic stop and for exchanging explicit images with a minor + he pleaded guilty on March 4th to charges of depriving rights and exploiting a child.  ABC 33/40

CULTURE NEWS

  • Jason Hamric, founder of Substrate Radio and a champion of Birmingham’s music and art scene, died at 53 after his wife, Jackie Lo, confirmed the news on social media. He hosted the show 'Meeting People is Easy' and worked as a cinematographer, audio engineer and musician—his work shaped local radio programming and promoted diverse music styles—leaving a lasting impact on the city's creative community.  CBS 42

  • Sen. Katie Britt met with local leaders at the Birmingham Northern Beltline site to review the expressway progress — the project will build a 52-mile loop to ease traffic and improve emergency response, with its first segment connecting State Routes 75 and 79 in Pinson set to open in 2026.  ABC 33/40
