  • Ashley Stegall from Trussville said Memorial Day brings a new meaning to her family as she remembered her late husband, Army Sgt. Jason Stegall, a decorated paratrooper who earned a Purple Heart and Bronze Star Medal with a V device for valor. Her 16-year-old son still wears his father’s beret to honor his memory—reminding the community of the deep sacrifice behind military service.  CBS 42

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • An unidentified body was found after a house fire in Graysville Sunday night—fire crews reached the fully engulfed home on the 500 block of 7th Avenue SW around 9:30 p.m. and the Jefferson County Coroner's Office pronounced the person dead at 10:17 p.m. while authorities investigate the case.  ABC 33/40
  • A single-vehicle crash on I-65 South in Hoover near the Highway 31 exit left one person dead—two others were hospitalized as investigators work to determine the cause.  ABC 33/40

CRIME NEWS

  • At the Jackson-Olin graduation on Friday, Gerald Lomax Jr.'s parents received his diploma in his honor while the community mourned the 17-year-old student-athlete who was shot after leaving a Woodlawn High School basketball game in November—he was remembered as an upstanding student whose bright future was cut short.  WVTM 13

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The 2025 Alabama red snapper season opened on Friday, May 23 for private and state-licensed charter vessel anglers and will remain open daily until June 30 before switching to four-day weekends starting July 4 when the private angler quota is met. Researchers from the University of South Alabama reported a record number of red snapper on over 10,000 artificial reefs—indicating a healthy Gulf reef fish population.  Yellowhammer News

  • Alabama National Cemetery held its Memorial Day ceremony yesterday to honor fallen soldiers — community leaders and families remembered the service of veterans.  6 WBRC News
  • Birmingham will host the 2027 Congressional Medal of Honor Society Convention from September 13–18—local organizers say the week will include public ceremonies, educational programs, and private gatherings to honor living Medal of Honor Recipients and their families.  Yellowhammer News

  • Alabama and Auburn have secured spots in the NCAA Division I Baseball Championship regionals and will play their first games on Friday, May 30th. Auburn, a top-16 seed and regional host at Plainsman Park, will face Central Connecticut State at 6 p.m. CT — while Alabama will challenge Miami from Florida at 2 p.m. CT in the Hattiesburg Regional.  WVTM 13
