CULTURE NEWS

  • U.S. Rep. Gary Palmer announced Ever Waites as the winner of the 2026 Congressional Art Competition for Alabama’s Sixth District today. The winning artwork will be displayed in the Capitol for one year while entries remain viewable online until May 31.  Yellowhammer News

  • Birmingham City Schools held commencement ceremonies last week for the Class of 2026 at Huffman, Carver, Ramsay I.B., A.H. Parker, Wenonah, Virtual Academy, P.D. Jackson-Olin, and Woodlawn High Schools — marking the end of high school careers and a start toward future opportunities.  The Birmingham Times

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Heavy storms moved across central Alabama on Sunday, causing flooding from Fayette to Walker counties and possibly affecting Birmingham (with poor drainage areas at risk), and scattered showers are forecast today with further rain continuing into Memorial Day.  WVTM 13

  • Samford sophomore Bradley Franklin has won multiple Southern Conference titles and holds the fourth-fastest 110-meter hurdles time in the world; he recently signed a deal with On and aims to join the Olympic team soon (his journey is just beginning) in Homewood.  WVTM 13
  • Alabama Sports Hall of Famer Charlie Moore, a longtime catcher for the Brewers — known for scoring on Hank Aaron’s final RBI — died Sunday at age 72. The Brewers honored him before their game with the Dodgers in remembrance of his 13-season career.  AL.com
  • Birmingham Barons announced The Rickwood Game to take place on May 27 at 12:30 p.m. at Rickwood Field with fans able to purchase $10 tickets (dubbed the $10 Time Machine) for a historic game honoring a season-long tradition and the legacy of Negro League teams.  The Birmingham Times
