CULTURE NEWS

  • After closing briefly on Saturday, May 23, the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute installed a temporary HVAC system while repairs continue on its primary system (it will welcome visitors next week).  ABC 33/40

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Governor Ivey launched the 2026 Summer Reading Challenge to encourage students in kindergarten through eighth grade to read six books before August 1. The program aims to celebrate America's 250th birthday and asks students to submit a written reflection or drawing that shows what they learned about our nation's history.  Yellowhammer News

SPORTS NEWS

  • No. 6 seed Auburn baseball secured a 7-0 shutout over No. 3 seed Texas A&M Friday night at the Hoover Met and advanced to the SEC Tournament semifinals for the first time since 1999; they faced No. 10 seed Arkansas Saturday (first pitch at 3:30 p.m.).  1819 News
  • Birmingham lost 36-29 on Saturday at (Historic Crew Stadium in Columbus) when the Aviators, led by former backup Jalen Morton who threw three touchdown passes, scored 15 points in 22 seconds to dash the Stallions’ playoff hopes following a Sunday win over Columbus.  AL.com
  • Alabama softball swept LSU on Saturday with a 4-1 win in Tuscaloosa after a 7-0 shutout the day before. The top-seeded team now heads to the Women’s College World Series in Oklahoma City to compete for the national title.  WVTM 13
  • The SEC baseball tournament boosted Hoover’s local economy as game venues filled and local shops + restaurants saw increased traffic. Business owners reported higher revenue from fan spending and plan for future events.  6 WBRC News
  • UAB’s baseball season ended on Saturday after a 14-12 loss to Wichita State in Clearwater (Fla). John Paul Head hit two home runs and coach Casey Dunn remains optimistic about the young team's future.  AL.com
