- ➤ School is out and children will be ready to splash as the city of Birmingham opens four public pools for Memorial Day weekend — Crestwood, Memorial, Martin Luther King Jr and McAlpine are among seven available from 12 due to a lifeguard shortage. The city is seeking additional lifeguards at over $16 an hour and will open three more pools on June 3. WVTM 13
- ➤ Crews demolished the blighted Vue on Prince at 3128 Prince Avenue Wednesday after the City Attorney sued the property owners for repeated code violations and fires, with the work done by the owners’ crews. Mayor Woodfin said the action shows the city’s commitment to removing dangerous blight — a measure that cost no extra funds — and will hold owners accountable. ABC 33/40
- ➤ Brandon Baez turned his life around after the Jefferson County Public Defender’s Office helped him beat addiction—enabling him to become a homeowner and start a business and nonprofit. The office offers free legal counsel along with drug treatment and counseling services to support residents in Birmingham. AL.com
- ➤ On Friday, the City of Birmingham filed a lawsuit in Jefferson County Circuit Court against Norwood Plaza Apartments, LLC and its property management company, Tutwiler Realty, Inc.—accusing them of allowing repeated drug-related and public nuisance activities at 1717 32nd Place North. The city seeks a permanent and preliminary injunction that would impose 24/7 security, modern surveillance, and other measures to protect the neighborhood. The Birmingham Times
- ➤ Birmingham sued Norwood Plaza Apartments, LLC and Tutwiler Realty (1717 32nd Place North) on May 23 to have the property declared a drug-related and public nuisance after years of repeated illegal drug activity and threats to public safety; the lawsuit asks the court to issue an injunction that requires added security measures, fines, and possibly the sale of the property.
