- ➤ Birmingham Fire and Rescue crews responded on May 20 to an apartment fire on Tuscaloosa Avenue at 1st Street Southwest — they quickly extinguished the blaze though it damaged both apartments. 6 WBRC News

- ➤ Today, founder Bill Smith announced that Landing secured $180 million in debt financing to expand its portfolio of fully furnished apartments from 350 to nearly 700 properties by year-end — the funds will also boost its customer service, sales, and marketing as the company reaches into more U.S. markets. CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Birmingham Police arrested Timothy Antonio Moorer, 30, for fatally shooting 31-year-old Literrance Leon Bratton on May 18 when Bratton, who was at a food truck near a motorcycle club on the 2700 block of 30th Street in Ensley, walked away from a dispute over money—officers say Moorer lost control of his motorcycle during a brief chase and now faces an Intentional Murder warrant. 6 WBRC News

- ➤ Aubrey Bennett, a teacher at George Washington Carver High School in North Birmingham, was named Alabama’s Alternate Teacher of the Year during a ceremony in Montgomery this month—he became emotional upon hearing the award—and he credited family, friends, and Birmingham City Schools for their support. - ➤ On May 20th, severe thunderstorms swept parts of Alabama and Birmingham was in an area of enhanced risk for strong tornadoes, damaging winds, and large hail—isolated tornadoes were also possible. The storms weakened late that night as the system moved south of I-20. ABC 33/40

- ➤ Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall said the state will appeal a federal court ruling that struck down the 2023 congressional redistricting map for suppressing Black voters by keeping only one majority-Black district—Marshall has defended the plan as constitutional and in good faith. - ➤ Mayor Randall L. Woodfin today unveiled a proposed $591 million operating budget for Fiscal Year 2026 — which focuses on street resurfacing, public safety, and youth investment.
