  • Authorities released new details on a large drug case—officials say more charges are expected as the investigation continues.  6 WBRC News
  • A 17-year-old was charged with capital murder for the Feb 1 shooting death of Ronald Martez Bennett Jr., an 18-year-old student who was struck by more than two dozen shots while driving on the 600 block of Eighth Terrace West at about 12:21 a.m.; police said he is now in juvenile detention & held on an unrelated charge.  AL.com

CULTURE NEWS

  • Caleb 'Twizz' Heath, the 18-year-old drummer from Hewitt-Trussville High, played with top jazz musicians at Carver Theatre in downtown Birmingham during a late February jam session presented by the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame and the Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz - his strong performance on 'Billie's Bounce' and 'Four' showed his promise as he prepares to study jazz performance at Jacksonville State University.  AL.com
  • The city and state will officially declare May 22 as Sun Ra Day in honor of Birmingham native jazz icon Sun Ra, marking his birthday. The Sun Ra Day Festival will run May 21—25 and has raised $31,000 from community donations to fund events featuring performances, film showings, and educational panels.  Bham Now
  • Today through May 18, Birmingham will host 18 weekend events ranging from the Regions Tradition golf tournament—featuring top players and a $2.6 million purse for local charities—to family festivals like Pelham Palooza and the Birmingham Folk Fest with free admission options.   • In 2024, tourism in Greater Birmingham broke a 7-year record by drawing over 4 million overnight visitors, generating a record $2.57 billion in economic impact and supporting 51,887 jobs. Officials credited big events like MLB at Rickwood Field + Food + Culture festival with boosting $302 million in tax revenue and setting the stage for continued growth.  AL.com

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, Birmingham officials announced a $15M road resurfacing project that will repair several key roads to improve traffic flow across the city—work is expected to begin soon.  6 WBRC News
  • Shelby County Jail will expand to add 44 new beds & improve mental health and medical care as part of a two-phase project with the first phase set to finish by July and inmate moves beginning as early as August. The sheriff’s office is recruiting nine new jail deputies to prepare for the expanded facility.  6 WBRC News
  • A federal court awarded $417 million in a whistleblower case against Capstone Medical Resources, LLC and Dr. Sharon Waltz after allegations that the company billed Medicaid for counseling services never provided — whistleblowers Nancy D’Anna and Valerie Paige Zeiger will receive 25% of the award. The ruling emphasizes that misuse of taxpayer funds will be strictly penalized.  ABC 33/40
