  • Birmingham will host its first-ever chicken festival on Sunday, June 1 at Sloss Furnaces where local food trucks and art vendors will serve chicken dishes and showcase crafts. The event runs from 1 to 7 p.m. and tickets start at $15 (VIP options cost $35 and proceeds help Disability Rights & Resources).  Bham Now

CRIME NEWS

  • Jarrell Russell, a 26-year-old man from Birmingham, was sentenced to 20 years in prison after pleading guilty to gun and drug offenses — he was arrested on October 10, 2023 after fleeing a traffic stop when officers found methamphetamine, fentanyl, and a loaded pistol.  ABC 33/40
  • Birmingham Police are asking for help in solving the 20-month-old homicide of Micah Honor, 24, from Adamsville who was shot while driving on Sept. 30 in the Warrior Road area—officials say the suspect targeted his vehicle and urge anyone with tips to call the department or Crime Stoppers.  6 WBRC News

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Alabama Symphony Orchestra will host a free three-night concert at Railroad Park from May 23 to 25 in Birmingham. Families are invited to bring food, chairs, and blankets for a night of classical music under the stars—local food options will be available.  Bham Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Katie H. Collins, a teacher with 20 years’ experience at Bluff Park Elementary in the Hoover City School System, was named 2025—2026 Alabama Teacher of the Year by the Alabama State Board of Education. She will serve as the state's official ambassador for public education and will advocate for youth mental health with efforts to build classroom independence and resilience.  ABC 33/40

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The City of Birmingham is asking residents to help shape its Central Alabama Climate Action Plan aimed at reducing emissions and addressing climate challenges like floods and wildfires—residents can join upcoming Community Engagement Meetings and give feedback online. The plan will guide local actions for a healthier and more sustainable environment.  Bham Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The new regional water works board will meet this evening to review past financial moves including employment contracts, consultant payments and grants approved by the previous board while also discussing a purchase agreement to transfer water works assets to the city for one dollar. The seven-member board — featuring appointees from city, Jefferson, St. Clair, Shelby and Blount counties — was established after Gov. Ivey signed SB330 into law.  AL.com

HEALTH NEWS

  • A new report by Americans for Prosperity Foundation — Alabama shows that the Certificate of Need laws raise health care costs and lower care quality by directing funds away from hospitals. The study says repealing the laws would lead to more hospitals, save patients money, and reduce postsurgery complications.  Yellowhammer News
