  • Fifteen-year-old Camden Pierce co-founded the Recursion Program’s Young Leaders Board to connect youth with services that help fight poverty and homelessness in Birmingham, building on her volunteer work from age 10. She will launch a Social Capital Pledge this fall to encourage more local volunteerism and community support.  AL.com

CRIME NEWS

  • Birmingham police arrested 69 people between May 5 and 11 during a crackdown in high-priority areas—46 arrests were for felonies and 23 for misdemeanors, while officers seized 18 firearms, various drugs, and 14 vehicles.  ABC 33/40
  • Authorities are investigating a homicide in Mulga—officials say details on the incident remain limited.  6 WBRC News
  • Two people were shot in the Smithfield neighborhood — police are investigating the incident.  6 WBRC News

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Gas prices in Birmingham increased by 4.5 cents per gallon over the past week and reached an average of $2.71 per gallon according to a GasBuddy survey of 550 stations—prices remain 7.8 cents lower than a month ago and 47.9 cents lower than this time last year.  ABC 33/40

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Birmingham City Council canceled six special meetings over the past three days to discuss Act 2025-297, which would dissolve the current Water Works Board and create a smaller regional board — the last meeting ratified a one-dollar purchase of the utility until a lawsuit by a new board member challenged the sale, and more meetings are expected.   ABC 33/40
