ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On May 9, Fairfield firefighters and an animal control officer from the Greater Birmingham Humane Society rescued five animals from a burning building—none were injured and the animals are now safe and healing.  WVTM 13
  • A teen's life was saved today at a local baseball field—quick actions from a nearby bystander prevented a serious accident.  6 WBRC News

CRIME NEWS

  • Birmingham Police are investigating a shooting that occurred Sunday morning on 9th Street and 4th Ave. North—one person was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.  ABC 33/40

CULTURE NEWS

  • Residents in Druid Hills attended a walkthrough of the new $46 million Coca-Cola Amphitheater, which will open June 22 for festivals, concerts, and community events. The venue will seat 9,380 people & is part of the Star Uptown redevelopment on the former Carraway hospital site with plans addressing parking, noise and traffic concerns.  The Birmingham Times

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Staff, students and alumni of A.H. Parker High School celebrated its 125th anniversary with a four-day series of events held last week—these events included alumni talks, a $50,000 scholarship award, a sneaker ball, an alumni picnic, and an all-white gala at a downtown hotel with a teacher Hall of Fame ceremony.  The Birmingham Times

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Jimmie Stephens announced that Phillip Wiedmeyer— a retired professional engineer from Vestavia Hills with over 40 years of experience— has been appointed to the new Regional Water Board today after Governor Kay Ivey signed ACT #2025-297. Hours later, Wiedmeyer filed a lawsuit seeking to stop any board actions made after the governor’s signature.  ABC 33/40
  • Homewood City Council will hold a public hearing on June 9 to review the final rezoning of the proposed Samford Creekside District that spans over 50 acres. Developers have revised the plan by moving the track and soccer complex to Homewood soccer park — a change aimed at reducing environmental damage to Shades Creek.  ABC 33/40
  • HB8, a bill to limit vape products sold in convenience stores to FDA-approved items, has reached Gov. Kay Ivey’s desk as lawmakers debate its impact on youth health and local businesses. Rep. Barbara Drummond and her supporters back the measure while industry representatives warn it may hurt small retailers—pressure that leaves Gov. Ivey with a critical decision ahead.  AL.com

  • After losing the opener, No. 23 Alabama baseball swept both Sunday games against No. 6 Georgia—its first series win over Georgia since 2015—improving their overall record to 39–13. The team will travel to Florida on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. for their final SEC matchup.  1819 News
