CRIME NEWS

  • John W. McAdams, 31, from Winfield, was charged with murder—two felony counts for leaving the scene and driving under the influence of alcohol—after his tractor-trailer crashed near U.S. 31 north of Athens on April 6, killing 22-year-old William D. Hardrick and injuring Gabrielle H. Furline, who was treated at Athens Hospital.  AL.com

  • Helmets to Hardhats helps veterans start new careers in the building trades by offering earn-while-you-learn apprenticeships—veteran Devin Carlisle, now a journeyman with the International Brotherhood of Boilermakers in Bessemer, said the program gave him the skills to support his family.  Yellowhammer News

  • Gov. Kay Ivey signed legislation that makes Juneteenth an official state holiday—state offices will now close in its observance, formally recognizing the historic day marking the end of slavery following the Civil War.  1819 News
  • Judge Matt Fridy came home on Friday after suffering a major heart attack on April 15 and posted a thankful message with his family's photo on Facebook—he will continue his recovery at home with ongoing care and support.  1819 News
  • Governor Kay Ivey signed House Bill 386 into law on Friday—cutting the grocery sales tax from 4% to 2%—and the new tax cut will take effect on September 1. State Rep. Danny Garrett sponsored the law to help lower costs for local shoppers.  1819 News
  • Gov. Ivey signed House Bill 152 into law on Friday, cutting Alabama sales tax on feminine products like maternity clothing & baby supplies effective Sept. 1.  WVTM 13
