CRIME NEWS

  • A district court judge sentenced six people involved in a drug trafficking conspiracy that distributed over 1,000 grams of meth in east Alabama from fall 2022 to summer 2023, including Demarcus Sharon Brown from Anniston who received ten years in prison.  6 WBRC News

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Governor Kay Ivey proclaimed May 4-11 as National Small Business Week to honor small businesses that power Alabama's economy & create jobs. The proclamation noted that these businesses make up 99.4 percent of companies and employ 46.7 percent of the private workforce while recognizing local entrepreneurs with awards.  WVTM 13

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Councilor Crystal Smitherman, a First Tee alum who now coaches and sits on the board, recalled starting in the program launched by Tiger Woods and his dad in the early 2000s and its re-launch in 2023. A spring scramble was held May 3 at the RTJ Golf Trail (Oxmoor Valley) and a free life skills clinic (for Birmingham City Schools) is set for May 6 while a putting clinic is planned at Regions Tradition on May 13.  The Birmingham Times
  • Alabama's Teacher of the Year will be named May 7 at the Globe Theatre—part of the Alabama Shakespeare Festival—with four finalists chosen from 16 district winners after a rigorous selection process. The winner will compete nationally and serve as a full-time education ambassador—leading professional workshops.  1819 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State senators will soon debate HB445 to regulate hemp products in Alabama after the bill passed the House and a Senate committee in April. The measure would require licenses for manufacturers, ban hemp-derived inhalable items, and limit sales to those 21 and older—steps aimed at preventing youth access and ensuring product safety with proper labeling, testing, and THC limits.  1819 News
