  • Birmingham is hosting 22 local events from May 1 to 3, featuring pro golf at Greystone Golf & Country Club, a 30th anniversary concert with Third Day at the BJCC, and a book fair at Rocky Heights Print & Binding.   • The A.G. Gaston Boys & Girls Club is celebrating 60 years with a dinner on May 14 at Renaissance Birmingham Ross Bridge Golf Resort & Spa featuring Super Bowl champion Jalen Hurts in a fireside chat.   • Jefferson County Greenways + Glenwood have teamed up to support local parks by hosting volunteer gardening sessions at Ruffner Mountain, where adults learn native planting and sustainability techniques. BUSINESS NEWS

  • As of Wednesday, April 29, multiple restaurants owned by the Pihakis Restaurant Group have closed, including Tasty Town in Parkside (closed permanently on April 12) and Luca & Lucy at Valley Post (closed on April 27). Only a few remain open, such as Hero Diner in Homewood and select Rodney Scott’s BBQ and Little Donkey locations.  Bham Now
  • Wayback Burgers in Birmingham is adding chicken nuggets in 5-, 8-, and 12-piece portions and patriotic Summer Sips drinks, including a Red, White & Blue Shake, at its 1801 4th Avenue South location. The special menu, available through July, honors America’s birthday.  AL.com

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Alabama Community College System with the Alabama Association of Resource Conservation and Development Councils announced the Building Futures scholarship initiative that will award fifty $2,000 scholarships for aviation and construction studies. Applications open May 4 and are due by June 12 on the ACCS website.  Yellowhammer News
  • The UA president is asking the board for approval to start a new school focused on artificial intelligence. The proposal is currently under review to boost tech education for students.  6 WBRC News
  • Woodlawn High School valedictorian Nigel Boler earned more than $3.3 million in scholarship offers, part of $20 million for Birmingham City Schools top graduates, and he will attend Fordham University to study psychology; his success came from applying widely with guidance from teachers + counselors.  6 WBRC News

HEALTH NEWS

  • A UAB pathology study finds that the protein Bmal1 is driving arterial calcification in diabetes, which could lead to new treatments. The study used diabetic models (mice and human tissues) and was featured in the April issue of Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis, and Vascular Biology.  University of Alabama at Birmingham

SPORTS NEWS

  • UAB’s men’s basketball team is set to revamp its roster for the upcoming season after only one scholarship player returned from last season. The school has already added six transfers and two high school signees, expanding its lineup to nine players.  AL.com
  • Alabama coach Kalen DeBoer signed a contract extension that makes him one of the top five highest-paid coaches and runs until January (90% buyout applies if fired without cause). He praised the deal ahead of the Regions Tradition Celebrity Pro-Am at Greystone Golf, saying it will boost recruiting.  AL.com
